As a lifelong music geek, I'd like to believe that the music itself matters – that better music will eventually work its way through to popularity. This would make the popular music a North-West phenomenon, rooted in considered choice.

Sadly, the experimental evidence from researchers like Duncan Watts, Matt Salganik and Peter Dodds53 and the patterns that the sales charts exhibit point very strongly to this being a South-East phenomenon – popularity is more important to an artist's success than their talent or the quality of the music.
